Kennedy FitzGerald was appointed by St. Brigid’s Parish following an Architectural Design competition for a new church in 1993.

St. Brigid’s Church is one of the main Roman Catholic Churches in South Belfast seating up to 800 worshippers. The layout is based on a traditional plan but the spiritual and secular spaces are separated by the use of changing levels and volumes. 

The assessors report described the building as ‘a simple hall section most elegantly detailed and coloured, clearly a conformable place to be in, with the roof forming a unifying canopy above both ministers and congregation.’ The materials used in the construction of the church, influenced by the vernacular character of Victorian Belfast, were selected for their natural texture, colour and detail. 

 The Church is a magnificent example of how quality architecture, detailing and construction can provide a building and environment of timeless character that stands the test of time. As a focal point for the parish, it has enriched and supported the lives of parishioners for 25 years and will continue to do so for many years to come.
