Laganwood House was a vacant 4-storey office building located within the Lagan Valley Regional Park area in Belfast, which has undergone significant refurbishment. The refurbishment of Laganwood House will reduce the number of office buildings Habinteg currently occupy, in order to reduce energy usage, streamline business and departmental resources, and accommodate future growth.

The design team undertook an assessment of the existing building, its structure and the existing services to determine what could and should be retained to reduce embodied carbon, as well as where there were opportunities to reduce heating and running costs and where the building could be thermally improved to reduce operational carbon.

By retaining the existing reinforced concrete structure, stair cores, floors, blockwork and brickwork skin, the refurbishment of Laganwood House requires less materials and therefore less embodied carbon. This significantly helps to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction compared with constructing a new office building. Thermal improvements to the existing building envelope and highly efficient building services will help reduce operational emissions.
