Following a design competition in 2018 Kennedy FitzGerald Architects and Arcadis were appointed to lead an Integrated Consultant Team for the Emergency Services Framework. The framework included projects with Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

The refurbishment of Antrim Fire Station was one of the first projects identified on the framework. The existing fire station, located in Antrim town centre required internal alterations and an extension to meet the accommodation and welfare standards of a modern fire station. The existing building fabric also required significant improvement to meet contemporary thermal performance standards. Crucially construction work to extend and refurbish the station had to be carried out whilst the station remained in use including receipt of emergency calls and mobilisation of emergency response appliances. KFA and NIFRS worked closely to agree a detailed sequence of phased construction to minimise disruption alongside the contractor.

The project breathes new life into a critical piece of NIFRS infrastructure for years to come.
